Alumna Chef/Restaurateur Wins James Beard Fellowship

Elizabeth Wiley '71

Elizabeth Wiley ’71 was awarded a prestigious fellowship to participate in the James Beard Foundation's first Women’s Entrepreneurial Leadership Program. She is the only chef from Ohio and its surrounding states to receive the honor. 

The program comprises an annual fellowship for a class of up to 20 women to attend a five-day entrepreneurship and leadership training program to help women chefs and restaurant owners grow their businesses.

Chef Wiley began her career at The Winds Cafe in Yellow Springs and is now the owner of Meadowlark Restaurant in Washington Township and of Wheat Penny Oven and Bar in Dayton’s Oregon District. She also recently co-founded SageCraft Catering and Events

 

American Book Award for Debut Novel


Mark Anthony Richardson ’96 has received an American Book Award for his debut novel Year of the Rat (Fiction Collective Two, 2016). “For two decades, I've been living so close to the ground that I'm underground,” he wrote on LinkedIn. “Maybe now I can get funding for the second book.”

Fifty Plus Years of Journalism and Investigative Reporting


The work of Long Island journalist Karl Grossman ’64 was recently installed in an archive at the East Hampton Library. It contains Grossman’s reporting on Long Island government and political issues over the past 50-plus years.

The Reticent Socialist


A professor of law and philosophy at Georgia State University, William A. Edmundson ’72 has published, John Rawls: Reticent Socialist (Cambridge University Press, 2017), a detailed reconstruction of the late work of the influential philosopher. In it, Edmundson further develops Rawls’ non-ideal theory, providing guidance for finding one’s self in a society that falls short of justice.

A Notable Haircut...


The poem "The Full Treatment" by Philip Fried ’66, from his newly published book Squaring the Circle (Salmon Poetry, 2017), was featured on the Poetry Daily website on Fri., July 28th. "The Full Treatment" describes a notable haircut God received.
